Dating back to 1540, Childersburg,
Alabama lies in the area that was once known as Coca Coosa. It was here that the Governor of Cuba, Hernando DeSoto,
accompanied by Adelantado of Florida and an army of six hundred men, arrived after a long journey through Florida, Georgia,
South Carolina, and Tennessee in search of gold and other riches. While DeSoto didn't choose to stay and settle
here upon invitation of the Chief of the Coosa Indians, many explorers, conquistadors, traders, and pioneer settlers continued
to arrive over the next 250 years, thus providing Childersburg with the claim of being the "oldest continuously
occupied town in the United States. Located just 30 minutes south of Birmingham, Childersburg is home to the first
recorded cave in the United States hosting onxy draperies over 30 feet long, The Coosa River, and shores of two lakes providing
a great retreat for hunting, fishing, and boating.
